In last Thursday's Top Comments I made reference to something I wanted to expand on this evening.
I have a saying: it's all about the books and art supplies.
As in:
I have a job so I can buy books and art supplies.
I have an apartment so I have a place to store my books and art supplies.
I have a car so I can transport my books and art supplies home.
It's all about following my bliss. Make the jump with me.
I love to read. And I'm an artist at heart, if not by profession anymore
I stare around my apartment and all I see are books. On the shelves, stacked on cabinets, strewn on the floor from last week when I was researching some obscure point in Elizabethan history for a friend.
I haven't counted how many but it's in the thousands, easily. I've read every single one of them at least once, except for that shelf of crap my mother sloughed off on me -- (The Fountainhead? Was she kidding?). And I have severe anxiety contemplating getting rid of any of them, even the crap. The authors shared a part of themselves with me and I have to repay the debt by keeping the evidence. And so they stack up...
They are my friends.
If we go to the back room now you'll see my studio where, surrounded by the art books, are three easels (why do I need three separate easels? Ask me why I breathe!), paints, brushes, sketchbooks, canvases and panels, many flammable chemicals, pencils, pens and on and on and on. I come here to replenish my soul, when the world is too heavy upon it.
Few are fortunate enough to be doing what they want for a living; I am no different. But I follow my bliss in other ways, in my spare time, by immersing myself in different worlds or by creating my own.
What do you do? What's your bliss? Think about that as you read tonight's selections and let us know in the comments.

In Devilstower's wonderful inaugural front-page diary about the swearing-in controversy, Mishima had a wonderful point about the Rethugs and their supporters -- and their poor memory

This comment from taraka dasis just so right on I had to send it in.
from emeraldmaiden:
I love this comment from Frankenoid in tonight's WYFP and the strange sucking direction the conversation takes ....
Also in WYFP is glitterscale's account of time spent in India and the interesting things found there.
from va dare:
Here's one by Meteor Bladesthat made me lol AND want to throw up at the same time:
from Ambrosius:
